Description:

NHLA is offering a 3-day course on Kiln Drying.  Speakers include Dr. Adam Taylor, University of Tennessee Extension, Mr. Dana Spessert, NHLA Chief Inspector; as well other industry experts.  

Who should attend:  Yard personnel, kiln operators and supervisors.   
 
Expected Outcome: Develop an understanding to dry wood for value and defect reduction.  
 
Price:  $1,995 members, $2,995 non-members;
includes hotel room for arrival Monday and departure Friday, transportation to/from hotel from/to NHLA and for tours, breakfast at the hotel, dinner Mon, Tue, Wed, lunch Tue, Wed, Thu;  hotel reservations will be made by NHLA staff for students and confirmation numbers sent to students 1-2 weeks prior to the event.  Note that registration for the event closes 2-weeks prior to the start date.
 
Itinerary
 
Tuesday arrival
4:15 pm meet in hotel lobby for transportation to NHLA
4:30 pm -  Welcome Dinner at NHLA HQ and familiarization with NHLA's on-site kiln
 
Day 1:  Wednesday
7:30 am    pick-up at hotel for transportation to NHLA

8:00 am    Why dry lumber, the structure of Wood & its Moisture Content;  Dr. Adam Taylor, UT Extension

12 noon   Lunch Break -- NHLA Hosted Lunch
1:30 pm   Use of Kiln Samples, Including Sample Preparation; Speaker TBD
4:00 pm   Equipment and Maintenance;  Speakers TBD
                  start a kiln charge 
5:30 pm   NHLA hosted dinner, with transportation to the hotel following dinner
 
Day 2:  Thursday
7:30 am       pick-up at hotel for transportation to NHLA
                     weigh moisture samples 
8:00 am       Relative Humidity, Temperature and EMC; Dr. Adam Taylor, UT Extension
10:00 am     Lumber Stacking, Air Drying, Shed Drying; Dr. Adam Taylor, UT Extension 
11:00 am      Green Lumber Handling and Protection;  Mr. Geoff Webb, NHLA Dean, Inspector Training School 
12 noon        Lunch Break -- NHLA Hosted Lunch
1:30 pm       Kiln Types; Speakers TBD
3:00 pm       Kiln Schedules;  Dr. Adam Taylor, UT Extension
5:30 pm       NHLA hosted dinner, with transportation to the hotel following dinner 
 
 Day 3:  Friday
7:30 am    pick-up at hotel for transportation to NHLA
8:00 am    Drying Defects, Mr. Dana Spessert, NHLA Chief Inspector
                  check the kiln samples

                  with Wrap-up and Presentation of Certificates
